Basic Police Officer Training

Program Overview

The Basic Police Officer Training program is a full-time certificate course. This program is designed to help students develop the technical competencies, attitudes, and values critical to successful employment in the law enforcement/criminal justice field. Once certification is received, you may qualify for officer positions in local/municipal police departments, county sheriff departments, state facilities, and hospitals.

Certifications

Students have the opportunity to earn the following industry-recognized credentials:

  • Ohio Peace Officer - OPOTC
    (once appointed by a peace officer agency)

  • Standardized Field Sobriety - National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

  • Speed Measuring Device - National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

  • National Incident Management Systems

  • National Career Readiness - ACT

* Note: This program follows the curriculum set forth by OPOTC. All hours must be fulfilled in order to complete the program. Required hours are subject to change based on OPOTA standards.

Admission Requirements

  • Age 21 or Older

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Valid Ohio Driver's License

  • Background Check (BCI/FBI)

  • Medical Exam

  • Meet the Physical Fitness Standards

Students are also required to complete and pass a final physical fitness assessment at the end of the program to be eligible to take the written state certification exam.

Physical Fitness Assessment

Applicants interested in applying for the Eastland Basic Police Officer Academy are required to pass the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission pre-entrance physical fitness exam. The exam consists of push-ups, sit-ups, and a 1.5 mile timed run to meet the minimum requirements for entry into the academy.

WorkKeys® Assessment

The WorkKeys® Assessment is administered as part of the registration process. Students will complete the following sections: 

Applied Math - critical thinking, mathematical reasoning, and problem solving techniques.

Graphic Literacy - skills needed to locate and use information from charts, diagrams, etc.

Workplace Documents - ability to understand written text to complete a task.

Each assessment is scored individually on a possible range of <3 - 7.

Work Keys

Students will have an appointment scheduled to complete the WorkKeys® Assessment upon submission of the Adult Learner Registration Form and a $50 non-refundable registration fee. Learn more about how the ACT® WorkKeys® Assessment can work for you.

Equipment Requirements

Students in this program are required to wear uniforms. Many of the uniform items are issued to students and included in the tuition. Additional costs not included in tuition include, but are not limited to:  

  • Medical Exam  

  • Firearm  

  • Equipment  

  • Uniform Pants  

  • Uniform Boots  

  • Athletic Shoes     

Students should refrain from purchasing firearms, uniforms, and equipment until they have completed the registration process and attended new student orientation as the list is subject to change.

Technology

All necessary technology is provided to students in each classroom and lab during normal class hours. Students who wish to access school email or our learning management system (Canvas) outside of normal class hours will need access to the internet and a personal device.
