Teaching Professions Features Host of Top-10 Placements

Students from the Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools Teaching Professions satellite program geared up to travel to the nation’s capital for a four-day stay at the Educators Rising national conference. Between individual and team competitions, 16 students from the program traveled to compete and 11 placed in the top-10, nationally.

Sophia Samuel, a rising senior from New Albany High School, was a bronze medalist after finishing third in the Lesson Planning and Arts category.

A second team of Teaching Professions students put together a fifth-place finish in the Inside Our Schools category. Sydney Errington, Allison Slates, Shelby Tocash, and Cora Homes, all from Gahanna Lincoln High School, gave a presentation on an initiative for their home school called Hope Squad. 

Chloe Dickson participated in a second category as an individual and scored a seventh-place finish in Lesson Planning for STEM.

A trio of rising seniors from Gahanna Lincoln High School finished in the top 10 including:

Jocelynn Pfister (Lesson Planning for CTE), 5th place Amelia Alatsis (Creative Lecture), 7th place Cora Holmes (Exploring Non-Core Teaching Careers), 9th place

In addition to those that competed, Mary Kate Gebhart ‘22 (Gahanna Lincoln) joined the rest of the newly-elected Educators Rising national officers to convene and determine their official roles. It was decided that Mary Kate will serve as the national vice president of engagement for Educators Rising for the 2022-23 term. During the 2021-22 school year, she served as the public relations secretary for the Ohio chapter of Educators Rising.

The Educators Rising national conference was held between June 24-27 at the Washington Hilton in Washington D.C. The theme students and staff rallied behind this year was Shaping the Future. Four students personally adopted that theme by participating in the first signing day, committing to becoming a teacher in the future. Recent graduates Reagan Petersen (Gahanna Lincoln), Anna Rice (Gahanna Lincoln), Mary Kate Gebhart, and Elizabeth Valdez (New Albany) all took part in this Educators Rising first.

The Teaching Professions program is a two-year career technical program designed to prepare the educators of tomorrow with experience in classrooms, internships, field trips, and a curriculum that allows students to develop skills in designing learning environments and classroom management.
