Students don’t have to wait until they graduate high school to start their career path. This is one of the main reasons Tyshiem Robinson, senior at Canal Winchester High School, chose to enroll into Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools’ Exercise Science program at Fairfield Career Center in Carroll.

Exercise science student, Tyshiem Robinson '22 (Canal Winchester), poses after committing to the U.S. Navy this Fall.“Eastland-Fairfield had the opportunity for me to do Exercise Science and start my path to physical therapy,” he said.

Sports has been a mainstay for Tyshiem. As a student-athlete in basketball and track & field at Canal Winchester and with a muscular 6-foot, 6-inch frame, he wanted to explore all of his options within the sports and wellness industry and continue to stay connected to athletics. Tyshiem says he took his time to consider what else he might be able to do after realizing he may not play at the collegiate level.

Although Tyshiem was late to enrolling during his sophomore year, he made the decision to apply and was accepted. He has enjoyed the hands-on approach during academics and the ability to bond with students on similar academic tracts and interests.

It was this peer-to-peer support and the opportunity to build impactful relationships that led him to recognize the same traits of hands-on learning and camaraderie when interacting with representatives from the U.S. Navy. Tyshiem begins basic training in July 2022.

Tyshiem’s choice to enlist in the military was also driven partially by the reduction of the financial burden for higher education. His long-term plans include continuing his education after his active tour and eventually getting his master’s degree to become an occupational therapist. He envisions continuing his service in the military reserves.

His advice to freshmen or sophomores who are considering Eastland-Fairfield?

“Be prepared to jump in and be on top of what you want to do,” he offered. He also added that help is always available from principals to cafeteria staff.

“You won’t regret it.”
